He was also <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"280\" data-endindex=\"289\" data-paragraphid=\"7\">recognised<\/span> in the Dettol Salutes Campaign for spreading awareness among his community during the <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"377\" data-endindex=\"381\" data-paragraphid=\"7\">Covid<\/span>-19 pandemic, teaching them how to ward off infection. T<span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"444\" data-endindex=\"446\" data-paragraphid=\"7\">he<\/span> talented young writer who has just graduated from high school will head off to the University of Cambridge, where he has received a bursary for his UGCert in history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"9\">Five months after winning the Bal Puraskar, Souhardya received the Colonelcy, the highest civilian honour from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, USA. He had won the Gold Award in the Queen\u2019s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2021, patronised by the Duchess of Cornwall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"9\">Souhardya is also an elected member of the Royal Historical Society, University College <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"392\" data-endindex=\"397\" data-paragraphid=\"9\">London<\/span> and the Royal Asiatic Society for Great Britain and Ireland. <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"456\" data-endindex=\"471\" data-paragraphid=\"9\">Closer home, he has been <\/span>named the Most Promising Literary <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"510\" data-endindex=\"516\" data-paragraphid=\"9\">Talent <\/span>2022 by the\u00a0<em>Dainik Jagran\u00a0<\/em>Group.<\/p>\n<p data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"9\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19480 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.globalindian.com\/youth\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Souhardya_Amrita_Youth3.jpg\" alt=\"Indian Teen | Souhardya De | Global Indian\" width=\"609\" height=\"591\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 609px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 609\/591;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19480 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalindian.com\/youth\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Souhardya_Amrita_Youth3.jpg\" alt=\"Indian Teen | Souhardya De | Global Indian\" width=\"609\" height=\"591\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"9\"><strong>Revitalising the\u00a0glorious past<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"true\" data-paragraphid=\"14\">Already considered on par with the acclaimed mythological fiction author Amish Tripathi, Souhardya has just finished the manuscript on the life of freedom fighter Lal Pratap Singh, who showed great gallantry during the uprising of 1857 \u2014 a novella under the Prime Minister\u2019s YUVA Scheme. &#8220;The fellowship was instituted last year by the Prime Minister<span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"322\" data-endindex=\"322\" data-paragraphid=\"14\">,<\/span> to encourage books on India\u2019s unsung heroes to commemorate Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav \u2014 75 Years of Indian Independence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"16\">&#8220;The plot primarily\u00a0revolves around\u00a0Singh\u2019s\u00a0resistance\u00a0shown to General\u00a0Campbell, who came to recapture Lucknow\u00a0during that period,&#8221; Souhardya explains. His books,\u00a0<em>Scion of\u00a0Suryavansh<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Chronicles of\u00a0Suryavansh,<\/em>\u00a0are part of the <em>Shree Ram Katha series<\/em> that have been written in both English and French. His fourth book is in the process of publication by Rupa Publications. The talented writer is also a columnist of repute, with words in popular print and digital media like the <em>Sunday Guardian, Scroll, Lokmat Times Zest, South China Morning Post, The Statesman,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Outlook Traveller<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19479\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19479\" class=\"wp-image-19479 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.globalindian.com\/youth\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Souhardya_Amrita_Youth2.jpg\" alt=\"Indian Teen | Souhardya De | Global Indian\" width=\"614\" height=\"490\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 614px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 614\/490;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19479\" class=\"wp-image-19479\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalindian.com\/youth\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Souhardya_Amrita_Youth2.jpg\" alt=\"Indian Teen | Souhardya De | Global Indian\" width=\"614\" height=\"490\" \/><\/noscript><p id=\"caption-attachment-19479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Book mockup of one of Souhardya&#8217;s books prepared by Amazon<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"true\" data-paragraphid=\"18\"><span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"0\" data-endindex=\"7\" data-paragraphid=\"18\">&#8220;Winning<\/span> the Bal Puraskar was a thrilling experience, more so because, as a civilian, I was able to interact so closely with the Prime Minister<span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"140\" data-endindex=\"140\" data-paragraphid=\"18\">,<\/span>&#8221; <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"143\" data-endindex=\"160\" data-paragraphid=\"18\">Souhardya smiles. <\/span>During the virtual award ceremony, the Prime Minister named him as an example, saying that only dreaming won\u2019t do, taking action to fulfil those dreams is what truly counts in the end, and emphasised the importance of celebrating one\u2019s roots. This is, in fact, the young author\u2019s aim \u2014 to spread knowledge of India\u2019s rich history and mythology through his books and columns.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"20\"><strong>The formative years<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"22\">The only child of history professor Shakti Prasad De and Jayati De, who teaches history in school, Souhardya was naturally drawn towards historical monuments. He recalls growing up in West Bengal and visiting the state\u2019s many landmarks, only to learn later that the stories of these historical sites are still waiting to be told. He was enchanted by anecdotes of ancient times and started exploring the idea of writing down lost and forgotten tales that he thought his peers should know. <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"616\" data-endindex=\"665\" data-paragraphid=\"22\">Souhardya also has his own podcast.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"22\"><strong><span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"491\" data-endindex=\"494\" data-paragraphid=\"22\">The<\/span> best way to revitalise history is to present it through the realm of popular culture, in the form of cinema, books, and podcasts &#8211; Souhardya De\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"24\"><strong>The wonders of history&#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"25\">His parents\u2019 resources played a formative and vital role in shaping the young author\u2019s understanding, but Souhardya has done more than his fair share of hard work, more so because his focus is different from theirs. &#8220;My father specialises in modern Indian studies and I study ancient history,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;At the moment, for instance, I\u2019m researching education in the Indus Valley civilisation, to understand whether or not it had a centralised or vocational system.&#8221; He also plans to visit the site<span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"512\" data-endindex=\"512\" data-paragraphid=\"25\">,<\/span> to add greater value to his work. &#8220;I\u2019m a primary resource researcher,&#8221; says the teenager, who has several research papers to his credit.<span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"655\" data-endindex=\"656\" data-paragraphid=\"25\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Guardians of the Bequeathed | Souhardye De, FRAS | TEDxYouth@LakeManalapan\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HkMAvDRrDVc?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"29\">Always a voracious reader, Souhardya naturally turned to writing as a form of communication with the outer world. &#8220;When you read a lot, you develop an interest in writing like the literary greats,&#8221; he remarks. His love for Victorian poetry shines through in his own choice of words. &#8220;I always wanted to put something out into the world, and developed my own writing style over the years through intense reading.&#8221; As a kid, he preferred writing to doing anything else, even cutting down on his playtime to put his thoughts down on paper.<span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"573\" data-endindex=\"574\" data-paragraphid=\"29\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"31\"><strong>A\u00a0Bengali at heart<span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"18\" data-endindex=\"20\" data-paragraphid=\"31\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"33\">No matter how much he accomplishes, Souhardya makes sure his standards are set even higher. He intends to return <span class=\"red-underline\" data-startindex=\"113\" data-endindex=\"116\" data-paragraphid=\"33\">from<\/span> the University of Cambridge after completing his studies and join the Indian Foreign Services, in the footsteps of Satyendra Nath Tagore, the social reformer, poet, composer, and writer from Kolkata, who became the first Indian civil service officer in 1863. Another inspiration, he says, is Satyendra Prasanna Sinha, the prominent lawyer and statesman who became the first Governor of Orissa and Bihar. Sinha was also the first Indian to become a member of the Viceroy\u2019s Executive Council and British ministry. &#8220;He happens to hail from Midnapore, like me,&#8221; Souhardya smiles. He hopes to bring about change in the sector and believes that a career in the administrative services will help further his goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"root-block-node\" data-changed=\"false\" data-paragraphid=\"37\">In his free time, the young author loves listening to <em>thumris<\/em> and <em>ghazals<\/em> and enjoys playing chess.
