Typically, players spend years fulfilling two key requirements: earning three Grandmaster “norms” which are exceptional performances in top-level tournaments, and by crossing the 2500 Elo rating mark at least once in their career. Before the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup in Batumi, Divya had never earned even a single GM norm. However, she had already reached the 2500 rating milestone in October 2024, ticking off one of the two conditions. Her victory over Koneru Humpy in the final activated a rare FIDE rule in which winners of certain elite events are granted direct GM status without needing any norms, provided they have crossed 2500 at some point. This rare shortcut sealed her title in one swoop.
