Some hum the British and American ones. Well, not fully, but at least some words! Yet, this Indian boy\u2019s anthem repertoire is something that will take you aback. The 15-year-old\u00a0Indian\u00a0anthemologist\u00a0Yathaarth\u00a0Murthy is a\u00a0two-time\u00a0<em>Limca<\/em> <em>Book of Records<\/em> holder for singing\u00a0the highest number of anthems in the world. He disarms with his eager smile as he shares how he mastered a whopping 260 national anthems\u00a0\u2013 that is how many there are in the world, incidentally!\u00a0That\u2019s not all, this teen is also an avid environmentalist\u00a0and was one of the 20 winners of the India 20 Under 20\u00a0organised\u00a0by White Canvas, a mentoring\u00a0organisation\u00a0recognised\u00a0by Niti Ayog.<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in Bengaluru,\u00a0Yathaarth\u2019s\u00a0first tryst with anthems happened when his Hindustani classical\u00a0music\u00a0teacher tutored him to perform anthems of four countries \u2013 India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Japan\u00a0&#8212; on the keyboard. \u201cThat was\u00a0back in 2014.\u00a0It got me hooked.\u00a0I liked the lyrics and wanted to explore more anthems.\u00a0So,\u00a0I began researching on YouTube and Wikipedia, and taught myself several more countries\u2019 anthems,\u201d the Indian\u00a0anthemologist\u00a0tells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalindian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Global Indian<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9313 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.globalindian.com\/youth\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_31791.jpg\" alt=\"Indian Teen | Yathaarth Murthy | Global Indian Youth\" width=\"417\" height=\"640\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 417px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 417\/640;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9313 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalindian.com\/youth\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_31791.jpg\" alt=\"Indian Teen | Yathaarth Murthy | Global Indian Youth\" width=\"417\" height=\"640\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Onward on, one anthem at a time<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Anthem spurting became a passion for the student of Vidyashilp Academy. \u201cIt lit a spark and there was no turning back,\u201d he says. Soon he was spending hours pouring over anthems of different nations. While he understood the gist of a few, he enjoyed the lyrics and tunes too.<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0Yathaarth, the only child of architect parents, found the accents and pronunciation a bit difficult, he kept at it. \u201cThe first few tries were difficult. As I continued to\u00a0practice, I got a hang of the pronunciations too. Before I knew it, I was able to sing more than\u00a0100 anthems,\u201d says\u00a0Yathaarth. That\u2019s how a young\u00a0Bengalurean\u00a0came to hold the\u00a0<em>Limca<\/em>\u00a0record for singing\u00a0the highest number of anthems \u2013 112 at the time.\u00a0\u201cWhen I first picked up learning these various anthems, I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d one day become a record holder or a TEDx speaker,\u201d says the class 10 student. Yet, he soon broke his own record when he learnt all 260 anthems, and once again set a new\u00a0<em>Limca<\/em>\u00a0record in 2019.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Saving the environment, one lake at a time<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>As a primary school student,\u00a0Yathaarth\u00a0used to love watching TedX videos and wanted to be on the hallowed platform himself. His dream soon came true when he was invited to deliver his first\u00a0TED\u00a0talk\u00a0in\u00a02018 at age 12. \u201cMy first talk was about my journey as an\u00a0anthemologist,\u201d says the youth who has so far given four TED talks, the most recent in December 2020.\u00a0The topics have been varied:\u00a0environment, anthems, and on pursuing one\u2019s dreams.<\/p>\n<p>After he\u2019d set his second\u00a0<em>Limca<\/em>\u00a0record,\u00a0Yathaarth\u00a0wondered, \u201cWhat next?\u201d \u201cHow could I give back to the community and do something meaningful? It was around then that I began learning more and more about the environment and climate change. I watched Greta\u00a0Thunberg\u2019s speeches. Shortly, I began working in the environment sphere in my own small way,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Soon, Yathaarth was holding climate strikes and working on a school project for the World Federation of UN Association which earned him more accolades in 2019. \u201cI worked on a project with four friends. We decided to revive Manae, a 4.5 acre lake on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The city was once filled with beautiful lakes, but today most are highly polluted or encroached upon,\u201d says the environmentalist, who launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise Rs 8.27 lakh for the lake\u2019s revival. He worked with Anand Malligavad, also known as the Lake Man of India, to revive the lake and would often visit the lake in his free time.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A 12 year old disruptive &quot;ANTHEM-ologist&quot; | Yathaarth Murthy | TEDxISBRBangalore\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1IVIcvIMKhU?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we first visited the lake, we could see the barren lakebed and there was barely any flora and fauna. Today, the lake is thriving and hosts various\u00a0birds\u00a0like peacocks, has beautiful flora and is the water source for a\u00a0neighbouring\u00a0village,\u201d\u00a0beams the boy who still visits the lake sometimes. His work to revive this lake earned him a spot on White Canvas\u2019 India 20 Under 20 list.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Making time count<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Anthems and the environment apart, Yathaarth Murthy is also a basketball and music lover. As he gears up for his board exams, he has already begun planning for a future as a diplomat representing India at the United Nations. \u201cI\u2019ve chosen sociology, global perspective, history, and environment management, so I can apply to colleges abroad, and work towards working with the UN,\u201d says the teen who spent the better part of the pandemic trying to conduct relief work.
